What is planking? Here's a General Definition according to UrbanDictionary.com
Planking: The art of planking is to lay horizontally across any object or the ground with arms by sides, aiming to occur in daring situations or a brotherly display of core-strength.
Further definitions (not to be read by those valuing their purity of mind) imply a unique quality of bravery before others also inciting mockery from those unfamiliar with the practice.
There's another version of planking Jesus introduces in Matthew 7:3-5
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Before we can call someone out on wrong behavior, we ourselves must confess ours a.k.a. "remove the plank" from our own eye.
So what does "planking" look like?
Well, in real life ... it looks like this:
Spiritually speaking, there's this thing that happens when we confess our sins before God. It's awkward and humbling but it's also and act of spiritual bravery.
Confessing sin to another person is an even more humbling feat.
Kind of like this guy in a coffee shop:
Being honest about our mistakes before God and others doesn't make a lot of sense to non-Christians:
What else can I say ... CONFESSION IS AWKWARD!
I remember the last time I spiritually planked. I over-blurbed another friend's life story in one of my vlogs. The Holy Spirit convicted me and made me call her. I left a voicemail & sent an email with the link. She graciously let me edit the video and the main chunk is still out there in the wilds of Youtube. (Yeah no, I'm not giving you deets! This was my planking!)
So anyways, planking is an awkward, brave freeing thing no matter if it's between just you and God or all of Disney World:
Did you mess up in front of a bunch of folks whom you now want to win to the gospel? You might feel awkward and stupid but your best chance of winning them to Christ is to confess your sin as thoroughly as possible. Yeah there may be jerks who rub it in your face while you're still eating dirt but hey ... they're accountable for their own words and your job as a Christian is to take it.
I know no other way to earn respect than to live a vulnerable, honest life.
How else will people listen when you call out their specks? Don't you want to see others freed to follow Jesus and live more free yourself?
Ok, honesty moment is finished here. Time to go exhort some people! Signing off!
